The aluminium industry is facing an unprecedented challenge of aligning to new sustainability standards while continuing to meet with global demand. The primary aluminium industry accounted for 2.6% of global greenhouse gases in 2020. The power required for aluminium production accounts for 60% of these emissions. Companies are racing to adopt clean technologies such as the use of hydropower or inert anode technology to reduce their carbon footprint.
Many companies are also embarking on a digital transformation journey allowing for process improvement, efficient use of energy; and creation of predictive and prescriptive models. In this talk we will explore the journey of this Digital Transformation and how different opportunities are unlocked at different stages of the journey. Furthermore, we will discuss how a data infrastructure facilitates this journey. An Operations Data Platform is necessary to gain process visibility by centralizing and democratizing operational data. This data platform should allow the addition of rules to determine if the process enters specific conditions. It should be open, allowing connections to 3rd party applications where sophisticated models can be created for predictive and prescriptive analytics. Here, we will explore how this data platform is utilized by aluminium companies to achieve success in these areas.

Jonathan Silvestre is a Systems Engineer at OSIsoft now part of Aveva. For the past 9 years, his primary focus has been helping mining, metals and materials customers on their digitalization journey through the use of their Operations Data Platform the PI System. The breath and scale of the digitalization journey varies from customer to customer and includes: foundational activities to centralize and organize operations data for situational awareness; the use of real-time data and analytics for Energy Management, Condition-Based Maintenance, Process Improvement; the integration with Machine Learning for Predictive Analytics. Jonathan holds a PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign.
